Everyone already has a drawer.

The habit

The paper is not the problem.

Ask anyone with a recovery phrase where it is, and the honest answers cluster: a notebook, an envelope, the back of a passport, a photo in the camera roll. Almost nobody is comfortable with their own answer, and almost nobody changes it.

The instinct behind the drawer is sound. Keep the important thing off the network, keep it somewhere you control, keep it where you can find it again. That is a real security model, not a mistake.

What fails is everything around it. Paper fades, gets water on it, gets thrown out by someone tidying up. A screenshot quietly syncs to three services. And none of it is legible to the person who might one day need it without you.

Where it breaks

Four failures of the improvised system.

  1. I

    It is readable

Anyone who opens the envelope has everything. There is no step between finding it and using it.

  2. II

    It drifts online

A photo of a phrase is a file, and files get backed up. The offline copy stops being offline the moment you photograph it.

  3. III

    It is fragile

Ink, paper and tape are not storage. They are a note you meant to replace.

  4. IV

    It is unexplained

The drawer makes sense to you. To the next person it is a scrap of characters with no instructions.

Keep the instinct.
Replace the paper.

A MI8OS card is the drawer, finished: still offline, still in your possession, but encrypted, durable, and blank to anyone who picks it up.
