The position
Plan for Tuesday, not for a film.
The realistic list is short: a device dies, a password is reused and leaked, a recovery email is abandoned, a person who knew things is no longer around.
None of those are dramatic, and none are solved by more features. They are solved by having a copy of the important few things somewhere that is not online and not in your head alone.
That is the whole scope of a card. We would rather do that one thing plainly than gesture at threats we cannot honestly address.
Actual failures
What tends to go wrong.
-
I
The device goes
Dropped, stolen, drowned. Anything living only there goes with it.
-
II
The reuse catches up
One old password appears in a leak and opens three other things.
-
III
Recovery rots
The email or number you registered years ago is gone.
-
IV
The person goes
Illness, distance, death, knowledge held only in a head is not recoverable.
Ordinary problems,
handled properly.
