Stories

Separating what was shared.

The situation

Shared logins outlive relationships.

Households accumulate joint access: the streaming accounts, the energy supplier, the family photo library, the phone plan, sometimes the bank. Most of it was set up once by whoever was nearer the laptop.

When a household separates, that access does not separate with it. One person keeps the recovery e-mail, the other keeps the phone number, and neither of them has a complete list.

Start by making the list. It is the only step that has to come first.

In order

Pulling it apart.

  1. I

    Inventory

Write down every account either of you can reach. Include the boring ones, they hold addresses and payment details.

  2. II

    Split

Decide which accounts move, which close, and which stay joint for now. Write the decision down.

  3. III

    Rotate

Change every password on anything you keep, and replace recovery e-mails and phone numbers with your own.

  4. IV

    Rewrite the cards

A shared card is now two separate vaults. Write yours fresh, and do not keep the old one.

The list first.
Then the locks.
